Paratuberculosis is separated by thickened intestine with granulomatous enteritis and acid-fast bacteria at necropsy, or by PCR, faecal culture or ELISA in the living animal.","Cattle, sheep, goats and other ruminants are affected, and control guidance also names deer and camelids. Infection spreads mainly through manure, and also milk, colostrum and in utero; newborns typically swallow contaminated faeces from the calving area or the dam's udder. Young animals, especially under six months, are far more susceptible than adults. The organism survives long in the environment, and animals shed it for long periods before any test is positive. Clinical signs usually take two to four years to appear. In Saudi Arabia, infection with both cattle-type and sheep-type strains has been confirmed in sheep and goats, and a survey in Khuzestan, Iran, estimated true seroprevalence near 9% in cattle and 15-16% in sheep and goats. A possible link to Crohn's disease in people is debated.","No cure. Clinically affected cattle do not respond to treatment, which is uneconomic; the disease is usually fatal, with animals losing condition until they cannot stand and die.","Paratuberculosis (Johne's disease) is caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis, a slow-growing acid-fast bacterium related to the agents of tuberculosis and leprosy. The organism settles and multiplies in the wall of the small intestine and its associated lymph nodes, where it provokes granulomatous inflammation built of macrophages and epithelioid cells. Early, subclinical lesions are small and focal with few bacteria; in advanced cases the enteritis becomes diffuse and packed with organisms, and the gut wall thickens and corrugates. The thickened intestine absorbs nutrients poorly and leaks protein, and this protein-losing enteropathy drives the wasting and the fluid swelling under the jaw.","Closed herds or test-negative replacements, clean separate birthing areas, early calf removal, test-negative or pasteurised colostrum and milk, keeping manure out of feed and water, testing and culling positives, separate grazing for young stock.","Infection is silent for years. In cattle, the first sign is often falling milk yield and weight loss despite a normal appetite, then diarrhoea that starts mild and becomes severe, with soft swelling under the jaw (bottle jaw), weakness and eventually recumbency and death. Sheep and goats more often show progressive emaciation, poor appetite, depression, poor hair or fleece and severe disability. At necropsy the small intestine is thickened with a corrugated mucosa and the mesenteric lymph nodes are enlarged.",null,[20,21,22,23],"bovine","ovine","caprine","camelid",[25,32,37,42,47,52
"agent, species, faecal, in utero and milk transmission, young age susceptibility, cattle signs incl. bottle jaw, tests, no cure, prevention","USDA APHIS - Johne's Disease","US government public domain (not stated on page)","https://www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-poultry-disease/cattle/johnes","load-reference-corpus.cjs","2026-09-17
"susceptible species incl. cervids and camelids, under six months susceptibility, 2-4 year incubation, intestine and lymph node involvement, cattle signs, ELISA and culture, Crohn's perception, management practices","Utah State University Extension - Johne's Disease advisory","not stated on source page","https://extension.usu.edu/animalhealth/advisories/johnes-disease
"intestinal thickening and malabsorption, diarrhoea progression, recumbency and death, PCR/culture/ELISA, no cure and no treatment response, control measures","University of Florida IFAS Extension VM256 - Johne's Disease in Beef Cattle","(c) 2024 University of Florida","https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/VM256
"acid-fast agent, focal vs diffuse granulomatous enteritis, protein-losing enteropathy, small ruminant signs, gross lesions, C and S strains in Saudi Arabia, PCR, Crohn's debate","Pathological Features and Genotyping of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis in Small Ruminants in Saudi Arabia (PMC13118573)","CC BY","https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC13118573/
"Iranian seroprevalence figures, species difference in signs","Comparison of MAP infection in cattle, sheep and goats in Khuzestan Province of Iran (PMC8464266)","CC BY 4.0","https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8464266/
"wasting differentials in adult sheep and CLA necropsy features","The Relevance of Caseous Lymphadenitis as a Cause of Culling in Adult Sheep (PMC7692964)","https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7692964/",[],[58,63,68
92,"o38nggxfahtkxsou2apjskq8","johnes-disease-map-elisa","Johne's Disease (MAP) ELISA
10,"f546m2dtwmw5apco5cesamxl","fecal-smear","Fecal Smear
18,"oavpytb2gskeaids3szmjkcm","bacterial-culture-and-susceptibility","Bacterial Culture and Susceptibility",[],[75,80,85,90
777,"h9lqv8yrfatdtq0hbnxk1jug","cattle","Cattle
790,"jkfqato7h2oc2847wygzmagk","camel","Camel
1415,"kb5w3rwizs3rqlt7he1sz639","goat","Goat
1439,"t5n3sypt319doki27xt9jx73","sheep","Sheep"]
