فًتْرة إفريقيا الشّماليّة Clarias gariepinus
تعريف
The African sharptooth catfish is a hardy nocturnal predator native to almost all of Africa and now widely introduced; FishBase records 170 cm total length, 60 kg, fifteen years and an unusually wide tolerance of 8 to 35 degrees Celsius. Its defining feature is the suprabranchial arborescent organ, a vascularised accessory breathing structure that lets it take oxygen from air, survive hours out of water or weeks in muddy marshes, and be stocked far more densely than a gill-dependent fish. FAO culture guidance works at up to about ten fingerlings per square metre without special aeration, reaching roughly 200 g in six months at 25 to 27 degrees Celsius; farmed output was 1,601,954 tonnes in 2024. Three husbandry facts shape veterinary work. The species does not spawn spontaneously in captivity, so every hatchery cycle uses hormone induction, typically 4 mg per kg of acetone-dried carp pituitary with a latency of about 10 to 14 hours at 25 degrees Celsius. Larvae turn cannibalistic once the yolk sac is absorbed, and severe cannibalism appears after about twenty days, so grading is a necessity rather than a refinement. And early losses are fungal and bacterial - Saprolegnia on incubating eggs, yolk-sac oedema from bacterial infection - managed by bath treatment rather than routine in-feed antibiotics.

FAO: 25 C for broodstock holding and artificial reproduction, about 30 C optimum for larval and juvenile rearing, growth retarded below 22 C and above 36 C; FishBase gives a wider survival range of 8-35 C
FAO: under hatchery conditions with optimal feeding and temperature, maturity at about 6 months and about 200 g; in the wild, median length at first maturity 260-750 mm TL depending on locality. FishBase gives maturity at about 30.8 cm (females 40-45 cm, males 35-40 cm)
