Common canary Serinus canaria

The canary is a small finch from the Macaronesian islands off north-west Africa that reached Europe in the fifteenth century and has been bred for song, posture and colour ever since; about thirty breeds are now recognised. Birds weigh roughly nineteen grams and are kept in cages and aviaries for ornament. The hen alone incubates, starting before the last egg is laid so that a typical brood of four hatches asynchronously; incubation runs fourteen days and the young fledge at about twenty-five. Reproduction and song are both photoperiodic. Wild birds breed from midwinter through July as day length rises, and the song-control nuclei of the brain enlarge and regress with testosterone across the year, which is why breeders open and close the season with artificial lighting. Clinically the canary is above all a proventricular case. Canary bornavirus was detected in a fifth of birds and a fifth of flocks in one German survey, and infected birds showed a dilated proventriculus, undigested seed in the droppings, incoordination, seizures and chorioretinitis far more often than uninfected ones: the passerine counterpart of proventricular dilatation disease in parrots.

Domestic canary. Both endpoints and the sole-incubation qualifier come from one sentence in an aviculture husbandry reference, which also states the cock does not share incubation. PROVENANCE CAVEAT, read before relying on this: this is a husbandry statement from an aviculture site, not a measured study - I could not find a peer-reviewed paper that MEASURED incubation duration in Serinus canaria. The closest peer-reviewed statement, read and NOT merged into the range, is Ciencia Rural (open access, CC BY), 'Evaluation of seasonal breeding of the domestic canary (Serinus canaria) in an artificial environment': 'Typically, during the breeding period, each female produces four clutches, with 3 to 6 eggs per clutch, and the hatching period spans approximately 13 days' - itself citing a breeding handbook, and giving a single approximate figure rather than a range. This does replace the withdrawn 14-day point value, which was not a measurement at all: both withdrawn sources used 14 days as an operational FLOOR telling researchers when to start checking nests ('Fourteen days after the first egg was laid (=minimal incubation period), nests were checked daily for nestlings that had hatched'), so the true figure is 14 or more by that definition, not exactly 14. Note also that where incubation starts before the last egg is laid, hatching is asynchronous and the apparent period varies by egg.
Weight of the kept domestic canary, from the species account in an avian-therapeutics review - NOT a fledging weight, which is what was withdrawn (18.7-19.4 g at 25 days). HONEST CAVEAT: this sentence does not print the word 'adult' or 'mature'; it is a species account of the kept bird, and the same article's dosing worked example uses 'a canary of 20 g'. The source states the SEXES ARE ALIKE, so the range is sex-neutral by the source's own account rather than by omission. ONE range across all types - song (Roller, American Singer), colour and type/posture breeds are named but not separated, so large posture breeds such as the Yorkshire and Parisian Frill sit at the top and small breeds such as the Fife and Gloster at the bottom.
