تعريف

The giant river prawn is the largest Macrobrachium, a caridean of South and Southeast Asian rivers and estuaries farmed worldwide since its larval culture was solved in the 1960s; 404,923 tonnes were reported for 2024. Adults are freshwater animals, but the larvae are not. They hatch as planktonic zoeae that die in fresh water and must be reared through eleven stages in roughly 12 parts per thousand brackish water at 28 to 31 degrees Celsius, which is why the hatchery is the phase that carries the losses and why inland hatcheries have to truck in brine. A fully mature female carries 80,000 to 100,000 eggs in an abdominal brood chamber for about twenty days at 28 degrees. Grow-out runs three and a half to six months to roughly 20 g. The distinctive management problem is social rather than infectious: males settle into three morphotypes, blue-claw, orange-claw and small male, and dominant animals suppress the growth of the rest, so a pond yields a wide size spread and is often cull-harvested. Prawns cannibalise each other around moulting, are susceptible to white spot syndrome virus with variable mortality, and are killed by water at or below about 13 degrees.

المؤشّرات الحيوية

مدّة الحضانة
18 – 23

egg incubation in the female's abdominal brood chamber, from extrusion to hatching - not avian incubation; FAO records a mean of 20 days at 28 degrees C (range 18-23) under laboratory conditions

أقصى طول
34
مصادر متعارضة

males; SOURCES DISAGREE and both are kept - SeaLifeBase gives 34.0 cm TL male/unsexed and 26 cm TL female, FAO Technical Paper 428 gives adult males to 33 cm and adult females to 29 cm total body length

حرارة الماء المثلى
28 – 31

FAO larval-rearing optimum; below 24-26 degrees C larvae grow poorly and above 33 degrees C mortality is high. For temperate pond grow-out SRAC 484 stocks once early-morning water stays above 68 degrees F (20.0 degrees C) and treats 55 degrees F or below (12.8 degrees C) as lethal - Fahrenheit converted here

العمر عند أول تكاثر
3 – 4 months

months after stocking as postlarvae, not from hatching; FAO records berried females collected from ponds three months after stocking and females about four months old spawning after eyestalk ablation. FAO gives maturity by weight as 15-20 g, with berried females seen as small as 6.5 g
