Guinea fowl Numididae
تعريف
This entry is the family Numididae; the bird actually farmed is the helmeted guinea fowl, Numida meleagris, and the figures here are its. Genomic analysis places domestication in West Africa, with domestic and wild populations separating roughly 1,300 to 5,500 years ago, and domestic guinea fowl together with geese account for about 1.99 percent of the world's poultry. They are kept for meat, eggs and feathers, and valued on farms for alarm-calling and for eating ticks and other pests. Output is modest: about 60 eggs per season free-range, 100 or more a year in a well-managed flock, up to 200 under intensive management, from small birds of 1.4 to 1.6 kg in FAO's figures and a median of 1.38 to 1.40 kg in Nigerian indigenous stock, males heavier than females. Eggs hatch in 26 to 28 days, matching turkeys rather than chickens. For a clinician the practical constraints are behavioural and environmental: guineas fly strongly, tame poorly and resist restraint, and keets are vulnerable to damp for their first two weeks, after which the birds are notably hardy.

Helmeted guinea fowl (Numida meleagris) under domestic management. Both endpoints come from one sentence in a poultry husbandry reference, which also anchors it to a familiar species: the same as the turkey. This is NOT a single-source figure and the published values disagree by a day or two - FAO's rural poultry manual states a flat 27 days ('A clutch of 15 to 20 eggs is common, and the incubation period for guinea fowl is 27 days', FAO y5169e03), and the SAME extension site's own incubation table lists Guinea fowl 28. All three sit inside or on the edge of 26-28, so the stored band covers them, but it is taken from one source, not assembled from all three.
Mature body weight of the domesticated helmeted guinea fowl (Numida meleagris) - Pearl, White and Lavender varieties. FAO states the figure as one range covering BOTH sexes, and gives the near-identical weight of males and females as the reason sexing by appearance fails, so this range is explicitly sex-neutral rather than silently merging two sexes. Not a growth-stage weight. The profile's scientific name 'Numididae' is a family; this figure is Numida meleagris only.
