Roho labeo, or rohu, is the second of the three Indian major carps and the column-feeding member of the group: a potamodromous cyprinid of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Nepal that FishBase records at up to 200 cm total length, 45 kg and ten years, maturing around 58 cm, feeding on plants at a trophic level of about 2.2. That niche dictates how it is stocked. In Indian composite fish culture rohu takes 15 to 20 per cent of the population in deep ponds but no more than about 10 per cent in shallow ones, because a column feeder has no column to work in a shallow pond. Farmed output was 3,243,026 tonnes in 2024. Like catla, rohu matures in still water but will not spawn in it, so hatcheries breed it by pituitary injection at about two years and 2 to 4 kg, and the eggs hatch in 16 to 18 hours at 26 to 31 degrees Celsius. The recurring clinical problems are ectoparasitic - Argulus, Lernaea, Ichthyophthirius and gill flukes - together with columnaris, which in rohu shows as necrotic ulcerated fin margins with haemorrhage, and dropsy caused by Aeromonas hydrophila.
