This class is for agonists at the pituitary receptors that respond to hypothalamic releasing hormones. The best characterised of those receptors is the GnRH receptor, a G protein-coupled receptor whose activation triggers a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system and stimulates secretion of luteinising hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone. The class should not be treated as a broad parent in practice: the MED-RT class cited holds only triptorelin (as triptorelin, triptorelin acetate, triptorelin pamoate and Trelstar pamoate), whereas the GnRH-specific class N0000175654 holds fourteen members including gonadorelin, goserelin, histrelin and leuprolide. Use the hormone-specific class.
