Rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus
تعريف
The rabbit is a herbivorous lagomorph descended from the wild Oryctolagus cuniculus of southern Europe and North Africa, domesticated in medieval Europe and now kept both as a companion and for meat and fur, in backyard units of two to twelve does or commercial units of 200 to 1,000 hybrid does. It is a hindgut fermenter, its gut making up roughly a tenth to a fifth of body weight and ending in a caecum 40 to 45 cm long holding 100 to 120 g of pasty digesta. Fermentation products are recovered by caecotrophy: soft pellets taken directly from the anus and swallowed whole, half of them bacteria supplying protein and water-soluble vitamins, filling three-quarters of the stomach by late morning. Digestion takes 18 to 30 hours. The clinical consequence is that fibre is not optional; below about 10 percent indigestible crude fibre in the ration lethal diarrhoea becomes a risk, and gut disease was the leading cause of death on surveyed farms. All 28 teeth grow continuously, so acquired dental disease is common, found in a quarter of one clinic population and markedly less likely in rabbits fed hay. Rabbits are reflex ovulators, ovulating 10 to 12 hours after mating, with a 31 to 32 day gestation and litters usually of seven to nine.

Does (females), European commercial practice: served at 120-130 days with good fertility. Bucks in the same chapter are given a later figure - first mating timed for 135-140 days - so a mixed-sex range would span 120-140 days. FAO also warns that does first served at 5.5 months had LOWER annual productivity than does served three weeks earlier because they were too fat, so 5.5 months is the rejected option, not the target. Puberty itself is breed-dependent: 4-6 months in small/medium breeds, 5-8 months in large breeds.
Doe gestation from a veterinary reference. The same section adds the litter-size effect: 'Does with a small litter (usually <=4) seem to have a longer gestation period than does that produce larger litters', and the clinical rule that if a doe has not kindled by day 32, oxytocin should be given, because a litter delivered after day 34 is almost always dead. The previous FAO attribution was false - FAO X5082E07 (Reproduction chapter of The Rabbit: Husbandry, Health and Production) states no gestation length at all; I re-read all six text chapters (X5082E03-09) and the only reproductive day-figures there are implantation at 7 days, pseudopregnancy 15-17 days and the kindling-to-mating intervals. Only the reflex-ovulation half of the old qualifier was FAO's. Merck's own summary table 'Approximate Gestation Periods' gives Rabbit 31 (a rounded point, not a range).
