Definition

Breed information: Chhattisgarhi are riverine type buffalo with chromosome number (2N = 50). Chhattisgarhi buffalo bullocks are preferred over cow bullocks for ploughing the rice fields (especially during monsoon). Adaptability: Drought tolerance is very good, heat tolerance is excellent. Studies based on relative gene expression of heat shock proteins viz. HSP 60, HSP 70 and HSP 90 in Chhattisgarhi buffalo have shown that they are better heat tolerant buffaloes. Special qualities: Buffalo keepers of Chhattisgarh prefer Chhattisgarhi buffalo bullocks for ploughing rice fields and other agricultrual operations. Comments: Chhattisgarhi buffaloes are maintained on extensive system of management called Bathaan system of housing. It is a semi-migratory system of management of buffaloes where buffaloes are taken to nearby forest/hillocks/free grazing land. Herds of related farmers are pooled and housed in a temporary wooden enclosure to save cost of management and labour.
