Glucocorticoid Receptor Agonists

The glucocorticoid receptor is an intracellular receptor for glucocorticoids with a dual mode of action: as a transcription factor binding glucocorticoid response elements in both nuclear and mitochondrial DNA, and as a modulator of other transcription factors. Through these routes it affects inflammatory responses, cellular proliferation and differentiation in target tissues, and it has both transcriptional activation and transcriptional repression activity. Drugs in this class are agonists at that receptor. The class does not separate them from the mineralocorticoid receptor and should not be read as doing so: UniProt describes the mineralocorticoid receptor as a receptor for both mineralocorticoids such as aldosterone and glucocorticoids such as corticosterone or cortisol, so a glucocorticoid agonist may also be a mineralocorticoid receptor ligand.
