The domestic goat is a browsing small ruminant kept for meat, milk and fibre. The US herd stood at 2.51 million head on 1 January 2026, split into 2.01 million meat and other goats, 415,000 milk goats and 89,000 Angoras, with a 2025 kid crop of 1.52 million and 430,000 pounds of mohair at 5.1 pounds a clip. Feeding behaviour separates goats from sheep: they browse rather than graze, using prehensile lips to strip the most nutritious parts of plants and spreading pressure across vegetation classes, which changes both nutrition planning and parasite exposure. Does cycle every 20 to 21 days from July through January and stand in heat one to two days; they reach sexual maturity at five to nine months but are held back to about a year or 60 percent of adult weight before first breeding; gestation runs 147 to 155 days, averaging 150, and two kids of 4 to 6 pounds is the usual result. Spanish does run 60 to 80 pounds in Georgia and up to 130 in Texas, bucks 80 to 120 and up to 200. Normal temperature is given as 104 F, heart rate 70 to 80, respiration 12 to 15. Clinically the defining problem is Haemonchus contortus anaemia, managed by FAMACHA eyelid scoring, followed by coccidiosis, enterotoxaemia, soremouth, caprine arthritis encephalitis, foot rot and pneumonia.

Sexual maturity at five to nine months (UGA) or five to eight (Mississippi State), but UGA recommends holding first breeding to one year or 60 percent of adult weight - hence the 5-12 month span.

CAVEAT ON THE CEILING: three sources disagree on the Boer buck - ABGA 154 kg, FAO 140 kg, Races de France 130 kg; the highest is stored. This replaces 27-91 kg, which was one US landrace (Spanish/meat-type goats in Georgia) with the sexes merged.
