Horse Equus caballus
تعريف
Every modern domestic horse descends from the DOM2 lineage that arose in the Pontic-Caspian steppe and spread across Eurasia after about 2200 to 2100 BCE, displacing local horse populations; the Botai horses of Kazakhstan, long read as the first domesticates, turn out to be ancestors of Przewalski's horse instead. Horses are kept for riding, draught and sport rather than for food in most markets, and are counted as aged from fifteen years while commonly living into their thirties, so geriatric medicine is a large part of the caseload and dental disease affects almost every old horse. Mares carry a single foal for a mean of 338 days, with a wide observed spread of 313 to 370. The species' clinical signature is its gut: a small stomach of about 18 litres that is under a tenth of the tract, a soft palate that makes vomiting impossible so that choke is an emergency, and a large hindgut - caecum 26 to 38 litres, large colon around 75 litres - where fibre ferments over two to three days. Feeding must stay at least half forage, hold starch under 2 g/kg bodyweight per meal, and change over a week or more; abrupt change drives dysbiosis, colic and laminitis.

SOURCES DISAGREE, widest span kept. MSD's resting-heart-rate table gives the horse 28-40 bpm, but measured resting group means in 7-20 year old riding horses reached 42.2 +/- 7.6 bpm

MATURE weight by breed TYPE, from the NRC-based requirement tables in the Merck Veterinary Manual: ponies 200 kg, average (light/riding) horses 500 kg, draft horses 900 kg. The companion adult table is headed 'Mature (Over 3 to 4 Years of Age) Horses and Ponies' and uses the same 200 / 500 / 900 kg body weights, so these are explicitly post-growth weights. SEX IS NOT SEPARATED - the source groups by breed type, not sex; stallions of a given type run slightly heavier than mares, and no sex-split figure was found in a comparable reference. Thoroughbreds and Warmbloods sit at or a little above the 500 kg 'average horse' point. This replaces 321-435 kg, which was one Thai riding club of mixed-native horses and excluded ponies, sport breeds and draught breeds alike.
TYPICAL (average) lifespan, not a maximum and not a productive life. From the Merck/MSD Veterinary Manual, peer reviewed. The same sentence says miniature horses can live 40 years or more, so 30 is not a ceiling. Separately, AnAge records a MAXIMUM RECORDED AGE of 57 years in captivity, and names it as one Icelandic miniature horse called Tulle (Richard Miller, pers. comm.), with the 62-year 'Old Billy' record noted as unverified. This replaces 30-40, which the old source called the upper quartile of the horse's natural lifespan, not the lifespan - the same source treated 15 as the start of old age and 30 as 'very old'.
